Why did I design and build one?
« on: July 12, 2015, 07:45:27 AM »

Why did I decide to undertake this project?

I fell in love with the Inspire one when it was first released. The design, looks and the transforming abilities was something new to the scene and quite honestly, a refreshing change to the standard set up.  However, the biggest problem was the cost for me, this bird was simply out of my price range. I can understand why it was so expensive, the technology it encompasses is phenomenal. After then seeing a couple of poor attempts of making something similar I decided to set myself a challenge, could I design and build something that could fly and transform like something I wanted so much but would never be able to afford?  The gauntlet was thrown down, lines were drawn and the coffee machine was on overtime!

Is this really an inspire clone?

Not really, it uses original DJI Inspire 1 parts (The canopy) so it will look similar to one. All the mechanical parts are what I've designed including the mechanics to transform the legs but that's where it stops really. The DJI Inspire is a true feet of innovation and design. If I could afford one, I would buy one in a heart beat. Mine does fly, the flight controller I'm using (Naza M llite) is in fact made by DJI but it's doesnt have the functionality that the original one has. So this project was more about the mechanics rather than it's electronic functions.

How long has it taken to design and build it?

It's been around 4 months of design and research to get to the point I have something I'm happy with. I id build smaller 450 version with thinner arms / legs first, this came to a halt when I struggled printing the canopy, hence the move onto the full size version.  I've never seen an Inspire in the flesh so everything has been done off photos I've googled. I'm now also on my 5th roll of PLA to give you an idea of how many prints I've done.

Is the project finished?

I don't think it will ever be finished, well not until I get my very own original DJI Inspire 1.... or my coffee machine breaks ;-)

What would I do if DJI contacted me?

If they contacted me asking for removal of the site then I would obviously conform. This project was never about upsetting DJI, it was about building something I wanted enough to spend 4 months sitting in a little room printing part after part.  DJI I believe have realised that there are two markets out there for them. This is why there range of products provide items for the hobbyist like the flight controllers and motors, to the person who wants something to work out of the box. Would someone that builds this project stop them buying a inspire? I doubt it very much, they are two different markets and since my project includes DJI parts then they are making money from items they wouldn't normally sell. If at the end of the day you can afford an original inspire, then go and buy one.. there awesome !!

If you use any of my designs and can afford to donate to help pay for this site and the filament, or just buy me a beer then please click on the link below, enter an amount and donate what you want.

I thank you for  making this project a reality to us who can never afford a inspire 1.
A friend of mine has one and I am always amazed with the way it functions and flies

Welcome to our site. Try to go step by step printing part by part and keep reading post by post; that way everything is going to make sense in a short period of time. If you don't find your answers in the posts, we are here to help you.
