Mavic Gimbal / Camera best?
« on: March 15, 2017, 09:50:14 AM »
So I think this is going to be one of the hardest things to do.. The actual true mavic gimbal is a feet of engineering and design, the functionality and pure size is just outstanding. To think we can replicate something even close is an understatement..  BUT.. we do need something so I could do with some help locating the components we require.

At the moment I'm thinking we have three options.. please post more as it would help. Also, if you have any suggestions etc.. please post away.. Their are NO bad ideas!

OK,  so my current thinking is;

1. Fatshark v2 Camera  (small, compact.. but only 720p)
2. Mobius camera with lens extender (good camera but would need to find somewhere for the pcb)
3. Runcam3 (best camera, but size might be a problem)

I've added a runcam3 to the mavic model which is below. This is a 2 axis camera as no room for the 3rd motor.. Space is very very tight as it is. I'm not even sure if this is possible yet..

I have ordered some 1806 gimbal motors (two off) from http://www.rcmart.hk/product_info.php?cPath=334&products_id=8964?osCsid=s63v3d241c6h31j73e11hqq951   These are the smallest gimbal motors I could find..   I'm not saying they will fit or even work but need to start somewhere :-)

Let me know what you think. I'm happy to do either / both etc..

Steve

I've gone ahead and pre-ordered a runcam3.. My thinking is, even if I don't use it on this project, then I think it would look great on the next inspire re-design :-)

I bought it from Runcam's website. Which is one good way of making sure you don't get a fake as I'm sure some will appear if the initial reviews have anything to go by.. this is going to be an ideal fpv camera.

http://shop.runcam.com/

It also a very similar size to a go-pro 5.. fancy that ;-p

Thanks,

Steve

Yeah, it looks really nice.. I'm just hoping it will fit!

Oww.. Mr Postmans been and he's brought me some gimbal motors.  Now these are tiny, but they look quite big once next to the mavic!

I will 3d print a runcam 3 for test size / test purposes.. anyway, photo below.

what size are those gimbal motors?

I was thinking about rewinding some old 1804s that I have sitting around, ive wound motors but not this small or as fine a wire as these would need.

I still want to just hold a raspberry pi camera so I don't need much torque.  But i'm not sure how i'm gonna find space for the pi0 and transmitter yet....

Hey Wayno,

I got the motors from http://www.rcmart.hk/product_info.php?cPath=334&products_id=8964?osCsid=s63v3d241c6h31j73e11hqq951  They are 1806 ones :-) so same size I think as your old ones.

I'm getting there with the gimbal.. well maybe anyway... lol  I've added a snap off support to the arm to hopefully improve the printing of it.. pictured below. Still need to work out how to attach the camera and also the xyz sensor..

Hi Steve,

Wow, they are small motors.

What gimbal controller/driver board are you intending to use?

Cheers

hey fella,

I've ordered one of these. It should fit on the holes that are already at the front of the base / middle sections.

fingers crossed :-)

Really interested on this...

What about runcam2 with the extension cable? Not sure if the electronics will fit inside with the Alexmos board though...

Hello everybody. RunCam 3 looks great and the price does not bite;)
There is still a variant of polaroid cube plus. (https://www.polaroidcube.com/shop/polaroid-cube-plus) but it is more expensive (there are probably fewer motors to find, here's the site for the work of the suspension work http://www.simplebgc.com/eng/ can come in handy. Let's think together how to implement a suspension.

Another controller, can anyone fit this.

P.S.
At first it seemed that the space inside is enough to fit everything, but as the parts for the assembly came, everything stopped to fit !!!

Hey Yura,

That looks a nice small gimbal controller. Similar size also to the one I've ordered.  I've got a solution I think on how to attach the gimbal to the mavic :-)  Time will tell, it might have to much wobble due to the weight thats going on it.. will have to see. Photo below. This is a very early print.. on fast so the quality should improve.

My kids went through the 'loom band' phase.. and we have ended up with lots and lots of them.. Ideal for this project I think!

As for room, yes there isn't much free room inside. You have to be very neat and careful when putting it together.. Still it's nice when it's all done.

Wicked idea with the loom bands, yes I've got thousands of those as well so plenty of spares.

Another great find, I already have a board this small but its only an 8bit controller from another gimbal. Thanks.

I also really want to have 3 axis, it may not be possible but I'm going to try.  I already fly an IRC Xugong Pro (folding quad with 2 axis gimbal) and the third axis would be a huge boon. May have to heighten the front or main body slightly away from an exact Mavic Clone but I'm sure the ascetics wouldn't suffer too much and the folding wouldn't be effected.
