Which Black Widow motor?
« on: June 23, 2017, 09:29:59 PM »
Hi,
it seem really difficult to find many of the Black widow motors with built in ESCs in stock or for a good price. If I can't get the 1200Kv or 1800kV ones will either of these work:

Black Widow 2212 1000KV With Built-In ESC CW
https://hobbyking.com/en_us/black-widow-2212-18a-12d-cw-1000kv.html

Black Widow 2204 1900KV With Built-In ESC CW
https://hobbyking.com/en_us/black-widow-2204-18a-19d-cw-1900kv.html

I'm still a little unclear on what the numbers mean i.e. 2204, 2208, 2212. My understanding is that 22 is the motor width and the 04/08/12 is the height. Then what is the significance of motor height? Will any 22 motor fit on the 3d printed mavic clone?

Also what are the implication for using the foldable mavic propellers on these motors?

Thanks.

I have the 1900kv version and with the props I'm using they are a bit too fast (but they are cheap) and I might be able to program some of the top end out of them. for some reason hobbyking want 6.88 for the CW version but 20.50 for the CCW. I figured before the days of multirotor specific motors we just used to do the prop nuts up nice and tight. If you're going to go down that route pick up a usb programmer, the bit in the description that says there is a switch to reverse the direction is a lie.

I ordered the Black widow 2208 1800KV, all with CW (thread) direction - it spins CCW. I'm planning to change the settings of the ESCs to let it spin the other direction and then use self-locking nuts on the props.

You need an USB linker (hobbyking has an orange one "DYS linker"). Just plug in your ESC cable and use the BLHeli Software like in this description:
https://blog.seidel-philipp.de/anleitung-blheli-esc-flashen/
It was absolutly no problem with this description.

Here are some calculations:

Black Widow 2212 1000KV
https://ecalc.ch/xcoptercalc.php?ecalc&lang=de&cooling=good&rotornumber=4&config=flat&frame=400&tiltlimit=90&weight=850&calc=auw&elevation=500&airtemp=25&qnh=1013&batteries=lipo_2700mah_-_20/30c&chargestate=0&s=3&p=1&battdisc=0.85&esc=black_widow_18a_(built-in)&motor=black_widow_(ztw)&type=104|2212-1000&gear=1&propeller=dji&diameter=8.3&pitch=3&blades=2&project=Mavic - BW2212 1000KV

Black Widow 2204 1900KV
https://ecalc.ch/xcoptercalc.php?ecalc&lang=de&cooling=good&rotornumber=4&config=flat&frame=400&tiltlimit=90&weight=850&calc=auw&elevation=500&airtemp=25&qnh=1013&batteries=lipo_2700mah_-_20/30c&chargestate=0&s=3&p=1&battdisc=0.85&esc=black_widow_18a_(built-in)&motor=black_widow_(ztw)&type=104|2204-1900&gear=1&propeller=dji&diameter=8.3&pitch=3&blades=2&project=Mavic - BW2204 1900KV

Black Widow 2208 1800KV
https://ecalc.ch/xcoptercalc.php?ecalc&lang=de&cooling=good&rotornumber=4&config=flat&frame=400&tiltlimit=90&weight=850&calc=auw&elevation=500&airtemp=25&qnh=1013&batteries=lipo_2700mah_-_20/30c&chargestate=0&s=3&p=1&battdisc=0.85&esc=black_widow_18a_(built-in)&motor=black_widow_(ztw)&type=104|2208-1800&gear=1&propeller=dji&diameter=8.3&pitch=3&blades=2&project=Mavic - BW2208 1800KV

Black Widow 2208 1200KV (as originally suggested)
https://ecalc.ch/xcoptercalc.php?ecalc&lang=de&cooling=good&rotornumber=4&config=flat&frame=400&tiltlimit=90&weight=850&calc=auw&elevation=500&airtemp=25&qnh=1013&batteries=lipo_2700mah_-_20/30c&chargestate=0&s=3&p=1&battdisc=0.85&esc=black_widow_18a_(built-in)&motor=black_widow_(ztw)&type=104|2208-1200&gear=1&propeller=dji&diameter=8.3&pitch=3&blades=2&project=Mavic - BW2208 1200KV

All calculated with:
- DJI Mavic Props(8.3" x 3.0")
- LiPo 2700mAh 20C (30C burst)
- integrated 18A ESCs

I think 2208 1800KV and 2204 1900KV are still fine but you should not fly full throttle all the time. If you use the originally suggested battery (3000mAh, 10C only) you are way more limited so with 20C you're fine.

Sorry to resurrect this thread but i'm totally new to this & struggling to find the correct motors too. HobbyKing have the Black Widow 2208 1800KV With Built-In ESC motors in stock for 11.55 but they're CCW not CW.
Will the CCW work ok or do i need to be looking at the double the cost CW versions?

There is no problem to buy 4 CWs but you have to program the ESC to let it spin the other direction. (look for a USB linker at hobbyking to program it...its orange).
And please use self securing nuts (with nylon/plastic inside) to get sure you dont loose the prop. The original Mavic props have little "feets" which you have to cut to half. They fit in the motor bell and so the prop cant rotate under the nut.

I use this with my Mavic clone and it works well but unfortunatelly I have oscillations and need to find the problem now. I think adjusting my gain values will work.

I think it was answered in both the posts directly before yours

Has anyone been able to find Black Widow motors recently? I can't find 2208 or 2212 size anywhere.
