Auto bed leveling Project
« on: March 30, 2017, 12:49:41 PM »
So I'm trying to add auto bed leveling to my XYZ1.1 Plus Ramps 1.4 printer.  I've since designed up a new X carriage which has inbuilt cooling but I'm not sure this is spread evenly at the moment.. Anyway, I ordered proximity sensor with the idea it would pick up my heatbed through the glass as I got a 8mm one. Sadly it doesn't plus.. It's massive !! at 18mm diameter. So, plan B...

Plan B.. is adding a servo and a micro switch. This will swing down to measure the bed height and swing back up when finished. All this function is already built into Marlin firmware.. I just need to figure it all out.

Hoping this plan will come together :-)

Attached is a photo mess.. lol Attempt 5 I think I'm on now! This doesn't include the many print fails.

CdR, are you using this sensor? https://www.amazon.co.uk/LJC18A3-H-Z-1-10mm-Capacitance-Proximity-Sensor/dp/B00542U3M4
I'm using that one in combination with a 3mm glass (8mm seems really thick!) and it works perfectly fine (also using firmware based on Marlin).

Hey Microfi,  Sorry no, the sensor was 8mm, the glass is 3mm. But it still didn't pick up. I was only powering it off the 5v pin so that might have something to do with it. Anyway, gone for the servo option now.. lol I have all the bits for this one and its half way through a 5 hour print at the moment!!

Plus.. moving parts will look awesome when it auto-levels.. lol

Maybe you should have a look at this Level Shift:

I'm using that to connect my sensor to my 3D printer. It says it's compatible with RAMPS as well.

Thanks for the link Mircofi.. I've managed to get the microswitch and servo working :-)  Was up until 1am last night but it's only bloody working!  .. lol  I've even took a video of it!

I'm printing off a tweaked version as I think it could be improved plus my nozzle cleaning needs moving to the right a little but I'm very happy.

Hi, CdR,

I sent you a quick message, looking to build this and crush my XYZ DaVinci 1.1 into a Ramps 1.4 machine.

Could you please shoot me a quick email/message back about the 1.1 conversion and this function above?

I'd be happy to donate to the beer fund! ;)
