Da Vinci 1.1 Plus filament mod..
« on: July 27, 2015, 12:03:19 AM »
Well I purchased a Da Vinci 1.1 Plus last week and I'm very impressed with it too. However, it does come with chipped filament cartridges but there are already hacks out there you can reset these and alter the temperature etc. What I intend doing is adding a little arduino + touchscreen inside a empty cartridge which will give me a simple method of playing with the settings myself. There are already bluetooth / wifi examples I've seen but they all cost money, hence going for a self build cheaper option that I think will be easier to use.

So this really just a bit of a on going thread showing the progress as I go.  I've ordered the 2.4 touchscreen shield which should be here in a few days..

Well I finally received the little 2.4 inch arduino touchscreen shield.  I've made a start tonight writing the code for the screen gui.. it's coming along quite nicely :-)

Well,

After failing to get PLA to print after various methods (different heat sinks / kapton tape / moving fans / different hot ends)  I decided to have a go at fitting a MK8 extruder. I've done a direct replacement but as I need to use the Da Vinci firmware I can't alter the extruder settings.  I measured  my da vinci extruder diameter (the cog on the motor) and its 10.81 and my mk8 extruder is 10.76.. So it's pretty dam close. Sadly my mk8 came with a 0.3mm nozzle so I'm waiting for a 0.4mm one before I can actually see if it works.

So, other than using some longer motor screws on my mk8 extruder and transferring the hot resistor and themocouple resistor over I needed to reverse the extruder motor cable as it was rotating the wrong way. I'm still using the original carriage etc. so its looking like quite a simple mod. fingers crossed on my print quality.

Once I get it up and running I'll design up a pcb and cable holder so, the below photo is a work in progress along with my cartridge programmer!

Here's a pic of the cartridge mod I'm doing. It uses a 2.4 inch tft touchscreen which will be mounted inside an empty cartridge. This is powered by a pp3 battery and has a momentary switch mounted where the old filament came out. So you remove the cartridge, press the button and select temps / material etc and click save. It then programs the eeprom up to match, well that's the idea anyway :-)

What's the bed size like on that?

Looks rather small?

Hi kingtheydon,

Bed size or print size is 20cm x 20cm x 20cm, so standard really. It's quite a big machine as it's all enclosed, very happy with the prints I'm getting of it as well.

Cheers for the reply.

I did a typical man thing and asked a question without fully reading the specs on the unit!

Literally noticed the bed size on the da vinci site just after I posted.

Really like the look of that printer...tempted to purchase one myself rather then use the Objet30 plus one here at work as I feel im taking the piss (its Rich from the DC Flight club by the way).

Bit off topic question but you STL files...I think I printed all the V1.1 ones, is there really much difference between those and the V1.3 ones as there is quite a few updates by the looks of it, some of them being slight tweaks to current parts.  But is there anything "new" to worry about or would those V1.1 files be okay to use?

Hi Rich,

Here is the change log...

1.3 Included outer leg lock band (WRONG PART, NEED TO UPDATE)
Updated inner leg bottom (added more thickness to the bearing bush)
Updated inner leg top (added more thickness to the bearing bush plus added a top rib)
Updated outer leg housing (added a top rib)
Updated outer leg housing mirror (added a top rib)

1.2   Included inner underarm link for brass bush (NEEDED)
Included inner underarm link for HK0306 bearing (use instead of brass hat bush)
Included leg mover plate for HK0306 bearing (use instead of brass hat bush)
Included revised center canopy top (battery cover) and clamp (NEEDED IF YOU WANT A SLOT IN BATTERY)
Included revised center top battery plate (NEEDED IF YOU WANT A SLOT IN BATTERY)

I just need to update the leg lock part in 1.3 but it's getting near it's final release now. Above I've marked the extra needed parts.

As for the printer Da vinci 1.1 plus. Its great and works out of the box for ABS prints. However, I also like printing in PLA so I've modded my extruder which cost about 30.  I can talk you through whats needed and provide the part files you need to print to do it if you want to go down this road. You also need to play with the cartridge as it has a built in eeprom that holds print temp / colour material / roll length but this has all been hacked.

Also, Windows 10 comes with an application called 3d Model which I'm told will print directly to the Da Vinci printer so no need to even use XYZ's software. I've yet to try this mind. Not sure if the slicer that turns the STL into Gcode is anygood but I will be trying it at some point.

I love the quality of those prints you showed on DC, they looked amazing !

Cost over 400 in materials apparently!! Used 2 bottles of build material and its worth a lot!

Oops.

Yeah I might have to pick your brains if I get a Da Vinci. We have an old makebot one at work too but that's seen better days.

Does this mod still work and where can I find info on how to replicate this?
Recently bought a da vinci 1.1 plus and all searches on the web indicate only 1.0 can be used in combination with resetting the filament eeprom.
