Printer recommendations?
« on: July 11, 2015, 03:38:09 AM »
Looking for printer recommendations from the experts here. I've looked at them in the past, but it's been a while. Thanks.
Phantom 2, Zenmuse H3-3D, Hero 4 Silver, Immersion FPV, Mini iOSD, Ground Station, Flytrex, Taranis x9D plus, X8r receiver. I just can't seem to stop, but I'm out of room, so I guess I need to print a new bird!

Hi dmiles,

I built my own a couple of years ago now but I would most likely just buy one now as they have really come down in price. It all depends on your budget and what material you want to print with.  It's worth getting one with a hotbed or the possibility to upgrade this. You can find free software to use like http://www.repetier.com/ which is the one I like.

Are you after a kit or a ready made one?

Probably a kit, depending on the price difference mainly. I've been going back and forth on getting one for a while now, and the wonderful information you have shared may just have pushed me over the edge.

I like the idea of building a clone, and using my Taranis. The one thing that concerns me is FPV. Do you know of any cheaper alternatives to Lightbridge? By the way, thanks for sharing all of this.

I am going to be installing my SJ4000 (Turnigy copy) on a gimbal and using the video out of that to a 5.8 200mw TX. This will be received either by my fatshark altitudes or my boscam 7 inch screen which I've bolted to the top of my transmitter. Nothing as fancy as this lightbridge thing but it will be fine for what I'm after. :-) The 7inch screen has a 32ch rx built in and cost me about 100 I think. The 5.8 tx to go in the quad was about 25.

I can give you model numbers and links of what I'm using if that help?

Steve

I actually have a P2 w/ zenmuse H3-3D, video TX, and a 10" monitor that I could move over to a clone. I also have an iosd mini, ground station, and even a flytrex. I like flying autonomous, and already had a P2 fly away, so that's why I use the flytrex. Would be interesting moving all this over.

wow.. you have all the gear then already :-)  The best thing with this is if you break it you just print off a new part. I mixed up my motors the first time I tried mine and flipped it on take off.. one broken arm joint reprinted and was good to go again.  I'm currently waiting on some more props (Gemfan 1347) before I can get it in the air again, I've ordered a few sets so should be ok for a bit.. lol

I should have a fully working plug in battery tomorrow, you just drop it in and it auto connects the xt plug and away you go... will release the files once I know it all lines up.

I pulled the trigger on this one. It's a refurb, but was refurbed by Robo, at their factory in San Diego.

I made an offer of $500, and they came back with $550, so I took it. Huge print area, hot bed, auto leveling, and can print with several materials in addition to ABS or PLA. Would have liked to have had dual extruders, but have already found information on changing to an all metal, and adding another extruder as well. I've read that there have been issues with this printer, but there is a large online community, and many if not all have been addressed.

Looking forward to getting it, looks like they have a few left! If anyone is interested, don't pay the $599!  ;D

Looks a nice printer with a few good reviews too. :-) Looks like it takes standard 1.75 filament as well which is a bonus. A lot of ready to roll 3d printers I've seen use a canister type with a chip on board but yours doesn't.

I bet you can't wait now to get it :-) I keep thinking of changing mine but it does what I want for now. I have got a new extruder but I need a part printing in ABS but I don't have any ABS and the new extruder uses 1.75mm and my current is 3mm so it seems a bit pointless buying a whole roll of 3mm to print a single part then swapping to 1.75mm.

Make sure you post some pic's when you get it up and running :-)

Absolutely, you can count on it. To quote Tom Petty, The waiting is the hardest part!

Did it turn up? Have you managed to print anything yet? First thing I did on mine was a Yoda head :-)

When it does arrive, and if you can wait until I get some experience with it, I would be glad to print your ABS part and send it off to you as a token of appreciation for all you have done here. If you have already been able to get your part printed, the offer stands for any parts you may need in the future as well.

Thanks dmiles, that's a very kind offer. I'll let yo know. BUT more importantly .... has it arrived yet?  I've had another look at the spec and to be honest I think you've got a bargain there.  I've searched in the UK and cant find anything similar for the price!

Not yet. I am pleased with the deal as it was refurbished by the manufacturer, so I'm expecting equivalent to brand new. Just has to come all the way across the country, and I haven't even got shipping confirmation yet.

Printing a part and sending it out is a small gesture compared to what you have done. I plan on helping out any way I can. That would include a journal of the work. I've always wanted to be one of those guys that makes You Tube videos, it's just that I'm sure it's a bit harder than it looks.
