Mavic build - Baaz
« on: March 21, 2017, 07:07:00 PM »
Just started my build but went a different way and have to modify stl body files heavily.

So what I'm using:

- Pixhawk Lite (with removed pins)
- 3DR radio - for telemetry, auto-missions and follow me via app on Android phone (Tower or QGroundControl)
- VTX 200mW + OTG Video receiver for Android (can see video from camera on the phone)
- GPS
- Turnigy Evolution transmiter + receiver (joystick like rc radio)

And now the best:

Battery: 3S2P Li-Ion (5200 mAh) made from 6 cells - Sony VTC5 20A 2600mAh

Battery has a cubic shape 40 x 75 mm and this is challenge to fit it inside. It weights only 300 gram due to high power density and is able to provide up to 60A maximum. Together with large props it shuould provide a great flight time.

I've built already a prototype and it is flying quite good. Tested follow me function which is very funny to play with when the drone follows you like a dog ;-).
I will post some pictures as soon as redesign my stl files (I make it 7-8 mm longer, wider and deeper) to fit battery better. Currently battery is sticking out 2 cm on top and I can't use top cover.

Here you can see Li-Ion battery package (3S2P) sticking out of Mavic clone.
If you ask about the button on top - it is safety switch used by all Pixhawk controllers. You have to press it to unblock the drone and able to arm.

Oww.. MASSIVE battery. Looking forward to the photos and more details on flight times / weight etc.  I've just had the Evo transmitter delivered, feels really nice in the hands but no triggers like the ps4. lol

Keep the info coming.. Also, how are you fitting all that in?

The controller with 3DR telemetry modem connected via USB. I'm using Tower app which is fun. Follow me is especially fun.
Fighting to connect OTG FPV receiver too but so far it can't work both (not enough power from the phone?). Will use OTG hub with external power supply.
Tower app can use UVC stream via OTG/USB and display it as a widget. This gives you a mavic-like feel. All flight parameters, maps and video on one screen.

And information why I'm using Li-Ion instead of LiPo:

- 3000 mAh LiPo is around 220 - 270g (depends on brand)
- 5200 mAh Li-Ion package is 300-320g (so only 50 - 80 gramm more but so much more juice)

Lithium Ion is more safe than Lipo. The only problem is maximum current which is not so much. But if you select good high drain cells (like from Sony) and connect them in parallel, then you get around 60A which is more than enough for this size of drone.

With some modifications of the Mavic Body and packing the other electronics very thightly I will have both good things:
- long flight time
- more safe batteries

So far it works good. 15 minutes flight is without any problem on 1900kv Black Widow motors. When change for 1200KV motors I can expect 18-20 minutes. And I mean flying not hovering.

Ok. Back to redesign the files. Still much work to do.

Some pictures of electronics. To fit all in I remove pins, solder antennas directly. When possible then stick with tape in layers. For VTX 6.8GHz antenna I attached external RP-SMA socket to back wall of the drone. I will try to squize in antenna inside but it is challenging. So far except battery I'm sucessfull. Maybe just need to design different top cover with a bulk shape to fit battery. Unfortunately my cad skills are not so great ;-).

Ground Control Station (Tower app) for android phone with UVC video widget. The cool thing is that you can download maps before flight and using it without internet. When I find way to connect both 3DR modem and UVC FPV video receiver then it is possible to show fpv video stream in a small widget window.

Working on re-design. So far 8mm longer, 7 mm wider. Will move the bottom 10 mm down to have at least 20 mm clearance for electronics under battery and make longer feets under front arms. Still top cover can't be flat though :-(.

This is how I attached gimbal mount. I used many rubber bands. It seems very strong plus dampens vibrations. I'm only afraid that this type of material will degrade over time due to air and moist. Will try to find simmilar bands but made from silicone. Rubbers have to be stretched quite a lot to keep the mount stable.

Hi,

extra battery is a big plus, I'm thinking of doing the same for when I get around to building my own - trying to get flight times on parr with my phantom 2

Them elastic bands are a work of art, I gave up trying to get mine through them tiny holes.. lol I just hooked mine round in the end.

Keep at it, wont be long :-)

Managed to fit 5.8 fpv antenna and designed bigger top cover to fit my monster battery.

Hi

Can you post the STL file in the 3rd party thread, might be interested to try a 4S battery.

Cheers

Sure, but need to adjust it for you. Unfortunately I made bigger body and some other changes so it will not be compatible with 4.0 version. For which version should I made it?

Hi

I am using Naza V4 build so if you can make for that would help others also using this build.

Thanks.
