Title: Mavic F3 4.1 with mods
Post by: alexa on September 29, 2018, 02:06:27 PM
Hello,

first i want to thank CDR for his amazing work.
I found the site after i watched a video at youtube and i decided to give it a try.
I already had a SPF3 and a 4in1 ESC 20A so the obvious choice was the F3 based model.
As i was trying to figure out how to have them placed i decided to start modifying the pieces.
First i split-ed the base at 2 parts to have easier access and created a second place with standoffs for the ESC.
In the process of assembling everything i found other pieces that i also needed to modify.
The model is now assembled but i still wait for a receiver and a GPS.
When the receiver comes it will be the moment of truth to see if the model flies.

Nice work !  Looking forward to seeing your flight videos. 👍

Thanks, i am eager to have the receiver delivered and test it.
The serious modifications i did are only at Z axis besides some to make things easier like a little bigger holes for the motor screws so the screw head can go inside the legs, a hole at the front of the base to easier be able and hook the USB cable at the F3.
I was thinking to use a magnetic USB cable but the little head has magnet and may interfere.
The F3 is the ACRO version and i will have a compass at the front top together with the GPS that may be affected from the little USB head or maybe the distance is enough, will test it.
Another idea i am working on is to install an ESP8266 to UART1 as passthrough to be able to access the FC over WIFI.
Anyway the flight test is the most serious for now.

Hello. What Battery are you using? Is it 4 or 3s?

Hi, for now i have some existing 3S and 2S that i am testing on the desk. The electronics can use 2S,3S or 4S.
The modified extended back top is for a 3s 2600mah that i had available.
The setup as it is now can fit batteries with dimensions 105(L)x35(H)x25(W), maybe a length till 110mm but will be pain to close/open it or handle the cables.

Finally I managed to embed an ESP8266 D1 Mini and running the configurator remotely via a Wifi virtual serial port

D1 Mini is connected to UART3 as its pins are 3.3V

Also BLHeli configurator runs through this virtual serial port

I found some time and space to test the bird.
It hovers nicely, but only with Horizon mode in iNav as i found i have COG problem depending the batteries used.
With a 115mm long 3S 2600mah there was serious forward leaning in ACRO mode and i couldn't get it off the ground at all.
Enabling the Horizon mode though it hovered like a charm.
I also tested with 2 x 1000mah 3S Nanotechs connected in parallel that were placed in the back of the battery space.
The COG problem was very light, almost gone.
Again with Horizon mode was perfect.

I couldn't keep it in the air more than 5 minutes cause all the batteries are very old and do not keep much juice.
Actually i had them stored in my refrigerator for around 5 years !!!
They survived but they cannot hold anymore in such demanding usage.

I wait for a couple new 3S 3000mah batteries.
With the changes i have done to the body they will fit if the declared sizes are correct but i have to solve the COG problem somehow.

For now the total weight with the 2600mah battery is 850 grams
