Mavic F3 Build based on V4.0 with Gimbal
« on: May 01, 2017, 03:12:17 PM »
Hello everyone,

At first I want to thank CdRsKuLL for his great work.
I started building my own Mavic. Fortunately I successfully build a Inspire Clone about half a year ago and gained some experience.
While printing and assembling the parts and reading build diaries I got some thoughts about changes.

I replaced the long screws with threaded inserts. I also increased the height of the top parts about 4mm, so that inserts will fit in.
The middle part was secured with another two screws above the arms at the back because I thought it is a bit to flexible when the arms push against.
The catch at the back got a lever so that it is easier to pull it off.

The original Mavic has its front LEDs in the arms, so I will place some small SMDs in the arms.
This part is still ongoing and I will redesign the arms and feet for that.
Because of the planned LEDs in the arms I got rid of the nose part and made more space for electronics in the front.

Lastly I wanted to have a recording camera on board. I found and ordered a small HD cam "SQ8" on eBay that should do the job. For that camera I designed a gimbal with the smallest gimbal motors (1807 Turnigy) I found so far. The weight will be around 80-90 grams if the specs are right. The camera did not arrive yet. I want to use the Tarot ZYX22 controller that should be small enough to fit in the top front.

Everything but the green parts are printed in PETG. Green is PLA. The changed parts are attached.

V0.2: Attached new files for arms with leds, hollow front, camera box, electronic cover

Netcrusher.  That looks like a beautiful mavic.  I love the green.  I love your gimbal.

Do you happen to have links for the camera and motor.

Thank you. I hope everything works like supposed at the end.
I bought the motors from Hobbyking https://hobbyking.com/en_us/multistar-1807-340kv-brushless-gimbal-motor-for-mobius-camera.html.
For the camera just search for "SQ8" on eBay. I bought it from china where it is still in delivery.

Thank you.   Again.  Looks good.  I started building mine last night.   These guys on this site have a lot of knowledge. So if you ever have questions. Just ask and they will help.  I'm very new to this so I have asked multiple times

Looking good!

I tried to use the inserts as well but was having issues with them pulling out as i was tightening them down. Have you had any issues? how are you securing them in?

I originally was using an insert that was 3mm deep, i have 6mm on order hoping the extra depth will hold better. All i did was use a soldering iron to heat the brass insert and press it in.

I would love to hear how they are holding up. I would much rather use shorter screws.

The inserts I used are 5mm deep. I used them for my Inspire project before without any problems. I drilled the holes to 4mm width if they were not wide enough. But you can not use holes wider than that. Even with 4.5mm the inserts wont stuck when  you tighten up the screws. I pushed the inserts down just a little bit below the surface and while the inserts are still hot I pressed the plastic around a bit together. Thats all. You must not tighten up the screws too much, this model is not that heavy and even the 3.3kg Inspire flies with these inserts.

I appreciate the help!

I put my inserts in the bottom of the base part. That way they don't pull out but pull in to the part. I also made an area around them 100% infill. That way they have plenty of plastic to grab onto.
I did that by designing discs about 10mm diam. by about 4mm or 6mm high, with a 4mm hole in.
and superimpose into the base where the inserts are required in simplify3d on the build table with a different infill %. Result is solid.

The rear motors are connected with the 20A LittleBee ESCs. They fit along the sonar cover left and right.

I'm not sure which firmware to use. Latest Cleanflight and iNav releases do not work with my sonar, so it seems useless.

I'm even thinking of getting a pixracer board because all my other builds are based on Pixhawk/APM and I'm very happy with it.
There also would be the possibility to attach optical flow and sonar sensors.

I changed the arms. The prototypes are still printing.

Looking promising...

The motor plate with foot seems to be strong enough printet in PETG with 40% infill. First flight will tell...

Owe love it. I tried to come up with a way to add lights but never managed it. Great job, looking forward to your results.

Wow, going to follow this build earnestly! What parts are you using, can you please share a full component list? I read that you are using LB20A - what about the motors?

Can I ask what those motors are?

Currently having a hard time finding motors the right size & power that are also in stock....
