Fusion 3D / Design your own stuff on Fusion 360...
« on: April 02, 2017, 08:42:58 AM »
Fusion 360 is a great piece of design software. It's made by Autodesk and is currently free to use for Home users. Just register on their website and when you download / install choose the Startup option.

Lots of youtube getting started videos are available, here is one of them....

So.. what are you waiting for :-)

First go and download it from..
http://www.autodesk.com/products/fusion-360/overview

Then download the trail, when you install it choose the startup option so its free :-)

3D Printer help and advice / Auto bed leveling Project
« on: March 30, 2017, 12:49:41 PM »
So I'm trying to add auto bed leveling to my XYZ1.1 Plus Ramps 1.4 printer.  I've since designed up a new X carriage which has inbuilt cooling but I'm not sure this is spread evenly at the moment.. Anyway, I ordered proximity sensor with the idea it would pick up my heatbed through the glass as I got a 8mm one. Sadly it doesn't plus.. It's massive !! at 18mm diameter. So, plan B...

Plan B.. is adding a servo and a micro switch. This will swing down to measure the bed height and swing back up when finished. All this function is already built into Marlin firmware.. I just need to figure it all out.

Hoping this plan will come together :-)

Attached is a photo mess.. lol Attempt 5 I think I'm on now! This doesn't include the many print fails.

3D Printer help and advice / SLA prints
« on: March 29, 2017, 07:22:57 PM »
I've been doing a bit of research regarding SLA printers and have been in contact with FormLabs regarding the Form2.  I'm hoping to do a review of one soon but they were kind enough to send over some sample prints.  All I can say is WOW.. I'm just simply blown away by the quality and the different types of materials. Ones even like a piece of rubber.   I've taken some photos below so you can see but to be honest they don't do them justice!

I really do hope I get a chance to play with one.. but in the meantime, feast your eyes on the photos below.

Please find below the initial unboxing and review of the Dremel 3D40 Idea Builder printer.

This is aimed to be one of the easiest printers to use.. Have a watch of the video to see how it turned out.

I'll be doing a more in depth review in a few weeks time once I've played with it a bit more.

Thanks,

Steve

General non RC Chitchat / Introduce yourself...
« on: March 28, 2017, 08:22:14 PM »
Just for fun.. here's a topic to introduce yourself. This is where you stand up and announce your an RCoholic.. :-)

Hi, my name is Steve and I'm an RCoholic! I grew up around RC as my dad was a member of a local club flying planes and racing cars. I think it just got en-grained in me and from then on it's never really left.

I design and sell custodial and cleanroom led lighting for my real job. I'm a big geek and love technology, built my own printer / cnc and plenty of other things including a nearly finished Lambo kitcar. I code in vb.net and have wrote some apps on Android.

My current printer is a XYZ 1.1 plus with the guts ripped out and replaced with a Ramps1.4 running marlin firmware. Currently added auto bed-leveling.

I'll no doubt be here for a while.. I don't think I'll ever be cured!

3D Printer help and advice / Wanhao D7 SLA Printer... under 500
« on: March 27, 2017, 10:25:18 AM »
A SLA printer for under 500.00,  I just couldn't resist....

I'll be doing a full review when it turns up. I've not used an SLA before so it's going to be a bit of a learning curve.  I'll document it as I go just in case you want to follow the same path.

  • Is it really easy to use?
  • What's the print quality like?
  • How long does it take to print?
  • How expensive are the prints?

Just some of the questions I'm hoping to answer.... can't wait for it to come..  new toy :-)

3D Printer help and advice / Printer problems
« on: March 18, 2017, 01:07:02 PM »
Well, I've been having a nightmare of late trying to get my printer working to a half decent standard. It's more age related to be honest.. it's been printing for the last few months near enough all the time. Must of done about 10 rolls of filament.. lol

Anyway, before it fails completely I'm trying to design and print a new extruder holder with some new bearings. I've ordered a cheap new extruder / proximity sensor for self levelling.. Hoping all this will turn up next week so I can transfer everything over.

I'm sure I'm not the only one with printer troubles.. :-)

3d Printed Mavic Clone / Mavic Gimbal / Camera best?
« on: March 15, 2017, 09:50:14 AM »
So I think this is going to be one of the hardest things to do.. The actual true mavic gimbal is a feet of engineering and design, the functionality and pure size is just outstanding. To think we can replicate something even close is an understatement..  BUT.. we do need something so I could do with some help locating the components we require.

At the moment I'm thinking we have three options.. please post more as it would help. Also, if you have any suggestions etc.. please post away.. Their are NO bad ideas!

OK,  so my current thinking is;

1. Fatshark v2 Camera  (small, compact.. but only 720p)
2. Mobius camera with lens extender (good camera but would need to find somewhere for the pcb)
3. Runcam3 (best camera, but size might be a problem)

I've added a runcam3 to the mavic model which is below. This is a 2 axis camera as no room for the 3rd motor.. Space is very very tight as it is. I'm not even sure if this is possible yet..

I have ordered some 1806 gimbal motors (two off) from http://www.rcmart.hk/product_info.php?cPath=334&products_id=8964?osCsid=s63v3d241c6h31j73e11hqq951   These are the smallest gimbal motors I could find..   I'm not saying they will fit or even work but need to start somewhere :-)

Let me know what you think. I'm happy to do either / both etc..
